Sweden is your partner in the green transition. Driven by urgency and opportunity, we accelerate the innovative solutions needed to achieve the Paris Agreement.

The time is now. The race is on.
Together, let’s pioneer the possible™

Sweden AT COP29

In partnership with Sweden’s pioneering businesses and thought leaders, Business Sweden is committed to advancing climate solutions that drive the global green transition. At COP29, our focus is to showcase innovations from the Swedish business community that can accelerate this transition while creating jobs, prosperity, and economic growth—solidifying Sweden’s role as a leading global partner.

Each year, Business Sweden leads Sweden’s official pavilion and non-negotiating delegation at the UN’s COP conference, uniting stakeholders from business, academia, and the public sector. With support from Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement, we aim to demonstrate that scalable solutions to climate change are ready for deployment worldwide.

At COP, the delegation engages in bilateral meetings, hosts impactful roundtable discussions, and showcases cutting-edge science-based solutions with a focus on:

  1. Strengthening Sweden’s global position as a prioritised partner in the green transition and Agenda 2030
  2. Accelerating Sweden’s contributions to the Paris Agreement
  3. Achieving Sweden’s transition targets, including reaching net zero by 2045.

SWEDEN – YOUR PARTNER IN THE GREEN TRANSITION

Sustainability and innovation are part of Sweden’s DNA. As a trailblazer in environmental action, Sweden was the first country in the world to pass an environmental protection act, the first to convene a United Nations conference with the environment at its core in 1972, and one of the pioneers in introducing a carbon tax. Yet, these milestones are merely the starting points of a much larger journey. Today, Sweden is on a mission to become the world’s first fossil fuel-free welfare nation, all while expanding the reach of its climate solutions on a global scale.

Driven by urgency and opportunitiy, we match climate challenges with solutions to achieve the Paris Agreement.

ABOUT COP29

UN Climate Change conferences, also known as COPs, (Conference of the Parties) are where governments assess global efforts to advance the Paris Agreement and the Convention. The goal is to limit global warming to 1.5°C, as informed by the latest scientific research held annually and represent the world’s primary multilateral decision-making forum on climate change.

These conferences bring together government officials, business leaders, scientists, climate experts, NGOs, and civil society from almost every country in the world. In essence, the COP is where the world convenes to assess progress, negotiate, and agree on effective strategies to address the climate crisis, such as limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, helping vulnerable communities adapt to climate impacts, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

COP29, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024, is a crucial stepping-stone and final opportunity to build support and stimulate increased ambitions for the next round of national climate action plans, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). NDCs are submitted every five years to the UNFCCC Secretariat. The second round of NDCs has shown that current efforts and plans are insufficient to meet the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement. By early 2025, each country must submit its third round of NDCs, or “NDCs 3.0”, which will largely determine whether the world can align with the Paris Agreement’s temperature goals and whether countries can build adequate resilience to climate change.

This next round of NDCs may be the most important documents to be produced in a multilateral context so far this century. Simon Stiell, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary

A mutual collaboration for change

While policymakers have set the direction for the green transition, the private sector has taken climate policy and turned it into business practice, working collaboratively to pioneer the possible and drive change on a global scale.

To accelerate this transformation, Sweden is using three keys to unlock the full potential of the green transition: innovation, policy, and finance. Most important is the recognition that we must act together. Collaboration is the new leadership – and Sweden seeks to be your partner in the green transition.

Innovation

We have innovative solutions bold enough to make a real difference

Policy
