In line with the Swedish government’s Asia initiative, Business Sweden has decided to establish a presence in Mumbai, its third office in India after Delhi and Bangalore. The aim is to be closer to Mumbai’s financial centre and the industrial region of Pune, which has traditionally been Sweden’s business hub in the country.
“India is predicted to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2030, driven by strong growth. The country is home to nearly 300 Swedish companies, while over 70 Indian companies have invested in Sweden, creating 7,000 direct jobs. Strengthening our presence and team in India will further enhance our ability to capitalise on this potential,” says Jan Larsson, CEO of Business Sweden.
Mumbai and the surrounding region are India’s commercial hub, generating 22% of the country’s GDP. Mumbai is also one of the world’s 10 largest trading centres, home to eight of the 10 largest Indian conglomerates, and accounts for 25% of India’s industrial production. Therefore, Business Sweden views this as an opportunity to support both export and investment promotion.
“Long-term presence in Mumbai will increase business opportunities in India for Swedish companies and provide access to a rapidly growing business ecosystem. Helping Swedish companies in Mumbai, Pune, Maharashtra, and Gujarat capitalise on this growth will be at the heart of our long-term focus on this important region,” said Emil Akander, Regional Director for South and Southeast Asia at Business Sweden.
This decision coincides with the appointment of Sofia Högman as the new Trade Secretary and Country Director in India. Sofia brings extensive experience in managing companies, international expansion, and board roles. One of her first tasks will be to build the new Mumbai office and strengthen Business Sweden’s presence in southern India.
“I look forward to continuing to run and develop our business in India. Initially, it’s about finding the right key people for the Mumbai office and capturing the great interest in India from the Swedish business community,” says Sofia Högman, Trade Secretary and Country Director for India.
