Hybrit

In 2016, SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall joined forces to create HYBRIT – a project aiming to revolutionize iron- and steelmaking. In 2024, the project has successfully concluded six years of research, based on a value-chain approach, together with research institutions and universities, backed with R&D funding from the Swedish Energy Agency.

HYBRIT has applied for and received several patents based on the successful results, and the project is now continuing, where the process is to be implemented on an industrial scale.

SSAB aims, based on the HYBRIT technology, to replace coking coal, traditionally needed for ore-based steelmaking, with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. The result will be the world’s first fossil-free steelmaking technology, with virtually no carbon footprint. Instead of CO2, the emissions will be H2O. It will reduce Sweden’s CO2 emissions by 10%.

And the technology can also contribute to decrease the global steel sectors emissions, accounting for 8-9% of total emissions.
