Urgency/Challenges
In Papua New Guinea, mangrove ecosystems face severe degradation from fishpond conversion, land reclamation, and overharvesting. Restoration success has been low, with only 25–35% of projects effective.
Contributions
As part of TotalEnergies’ Zero Net Deforestation initiative, BCC and Independent Forester piloted a nursery using Swedish technology. The system combines hydroponics, aquaculture, and forestry to raise high-quality seedlings. To date, 100,000 mangroves have been cultivated, enhancing biodiversity, carbon storage, and coastal resilience while supporting community livelihoods.
Success factors
Key enablers include seedling quality, improved nursery systems, and local engagement. The method shows potential to raise rehabilitation success to 75% and scale across the Asia-Pacific.
