Hong Kong faces pressing urban challenges that demand immediate, innovative solutions. With only 1,100 sq. km. of land and a population of 7.5 million, space comes at a premium, pushing the city to rethink land use and infrastructure. Issues such as soaring energy consumption with buildings accounting for 90% of electricity use, the city generating over 15,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily and landfills nearing capacity are compounded by aging urban systems struggling to support a modern, sustainable economy, creating an urgent need for smarter, greener approaches.

The Hong Kong government is responding with bold ambition. Its Climate Action Plan 2050 sets a clear target: carbon neutrality by 2050, backed by billions in public investment. The flagship Northern Metropolis project - a 30,000-hectare development along the border with Shenzhen - aims to house 2.5 million people and create 650,000 jobs, all while prioritizing sustainability.

To introduce this opportunity to Swedish businesses and to help open doors to business opportunities, Business Sweden is in collaboration in collaboration with the Consulate General of Sweden in Hong Kong conducting a delegation focused on smart and circular urban solutions in Hong Kong from 13-15 October 2025.
