Among the world's largest economies, Australia ranks 10th globally in GDP per capita and is the second-highest for median wealth. It’s currently the sixth-largest market for Swedish exports outside Europe, and many signs indicate that the trade relationship will only grow more significant over the next few years.

This report presents the 2025 edition of our Business Climate Survey of Swedish companies operating in Australia. The overall attitude is optimistic and upbeat, with 74 per cent of the respondents reporting their Australian businesses were profitable, and more than 80 per cent had a positive outlook for stable or growing turnover.

Australia is characterised as a resource and service economy, and over 90 per cent of exported goods are of a commodity type. The anticipated EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement is expected to further strengthen economic ties and remove trade barriers between the country and the Eurozone. This will create opportunities for the approximately 150 Swedish-owned companies already operating in Australia, but also for any other enterprises from Sweden looking to expand into the market.

The ‘Swedish brand’ is an asset for Swedish firms operating in Australia.  Overall, the findings indicate that the Swedish image is generally viewed favourably, and the majority of respondents report that being Swedish adds value. Many also report that their Australian partners frequently associate Sweden with innovation, reliability, and sustainability – qualities that reflect positively on their business.

A heightened national focus on sustainability has created momentum for green reforms in Australia. Sectors like energy and mining are experiencing a marked push toward sustainable transformation. The rise of renewable energy projects and the global demand for ‘green’ critical minerals have positioned Australia to play a central role in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
