Japan, along with the rest of Asia, is playing an increasingly vital role in Sweden’s global trade. And Swedish businesses have had a strong historical presence in Japan across a variety of industries.

This report presents the eighth edition of our Business Climate Survey of Swedish companies

operating in Japan. Overall performances are strong and the outlook for 2025 is optimistic, with 81 per cent of the respondents reporting profitability and 62 per cent expecting their industry turnover to increase in 2025.

Japan is in the midst of redefining itself as a more agile, forward-facing economy. The country has made increasing investments in the green transition and digital transformation, as well as cautious yet visible reforms in the labour market. Those efforts, along with inflation stabilising at sustainable levels, rising wages, and long-awaited signs of structural change, present new opportunities for Swedish companies operating in Japan.

The ‘Swedish brand’ remains a significant asset for companies seeking to establish and grow a presence in Japan. Known for its values of sustainability, design excellence, social equality, and technological advancement, Sweden is often associated in Japan with high standards of living, trustworthiness, sustainability and forward-thinking solutions – qualities that reflect positively on Swedish businesses.

Japan’s recalibration of its economy offers Swedish companies opportunities to deepen their engagement with the market, especially in regard to the automotive, semiconductor and life science sectors.
