Few countries of Sweden’s size have built such a broad and technologically advanced defence industry. As governments worldwide increase investments in defence, resilience and critical infrastructure, Sweden is gaining recognition as a trusted partner for high-performance technologies.

Sweden’s defence ecosystem includes more than 700 companies supplying everything from advanced weapons systems and combat platforms to surveillance technologies, software and emerging dual-use solutions.

This industrial breadth gives Sweden a unique ability to combine innovation with operational expertise. Today, Swedish technologies support defence and security operations across Europe, The Americas, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region.

ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE IN ACTION

Swedish defence companies have built their reputation on solving complex challenges in demanding environments. Companies such as Saab and BAE Systems Bofors & Hägglunds have established strong international positions in submarines, fighter aircraft, armoured vehicles, radar systems, artillery systems, electronic warfare, command-and-control solutions and missiles.

The Swedish defence sector is distinguished by its strong culture of collaboration. Large defence contractors work closely with specialist suppliers, research institutions, universities and small and medium-sized enterprises. All sharing a common mission to drive innovation and strengthen Sweden’s technological edge.

NATO MEMBERSHIP UNLOCKS GROWTH

Sweden’s NATO membership and rising global defence spending have opened up new opportunities for the country’s defence and technology companies. European and transatlantic innovation programmes are also encouraging greater collaboration between established defence contractors and emerging technology firms. Sweden´s role in NATOs northern part combined with the Arctic environment gives unique possibilities for the regional actors.

What sets Sweden apart is its ability to combine industrial depth with entrepreneurial agility and provide mission-ready solutions. Large systems integrators operate alongside highly specialised innovators, creating a dynamic ecosystem capable of delivering both complex platforms and niche technologies.

THE GRIPEN ADVANTAGE

No other defence platform illustrates Swedish innovation better than the Gripen fighter jet. Developed by Saab, the multirole combat aircraft has become a global showcase for Swedish engineering. It combines advanced capabilities with a flexible and efficient design – even capable of taking off and landing on ordinary roads.

Brazil, South Africa, Thailand, Colombia and Ukraine are just a few countries that have recently upgraded their fleets by purchasing the aircraft, and several high-profile negotiations are ongoing with other nations.

In similar developments, NATO recently announced that it has chosen Saab’s GlobalEye as its new Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) system to replace the fleet of AWACS surveillance aircraft.

WORLD CLASS RADAR AND SENSORS

Sweden is a recognised leader in radar and sensor technologies, entrusted by both European defence forces and the US Army and US Navy. As threats become more complex, situational awareness is increasingly critical, creating strong demand for advanced surveillance, target-tracking and air-defence capabilities.

Swedish providers bring cutting-edge expertise spanning hardware, software and systems integration. These solutions help military and civilian operators detect, identify and respond to threats with speed and precision.

A NEW FRONTIER FOR DUAL-USE COMPANIES

Some of the most exciting opportunities are emerging in dual-use technologies, where civilian innovations are adapted for defence applications. Sweden has developed pioneering strengths in cybersecurity, communications, autonomous systems and advanced materials – areas that closely align with NATO’s evolving technology priorities.

Swedish dual-use companies are developing solutions ranging from drones and sensor systems to cryptography, telecommunications, specialist chemicals and space technologies.

Beyond strengthening military capabilities, many Swedish technologies contribute to broader societal resilience and support civil preparedness, emergency response and the protection of critical infrastructure.
