Sweden–India Partnership for Next-Generation Mobility Safety

What

India is the 3rd largest automotive market globally, expected to reach USD 300–350 billion by 2030, growing at 8–10% CAGR, while simultaneously facing one of the most pressing road-safety challenges globally.

India records over 150,000 road fatalities annually, with more than 450,000 serious accidents, keeping it among the highest in the world. Road traffic injuries impose an economic cost estimated at ~3% of GDP annually, equivalent to USD 100+ billion, creating a strong economic and political imperative for systemic safety interventions.

India has formally committed to the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety and the Stockholm Declaration, targeting a 50% reduction in road deaths and serious injuries by 2030. This commitment is now translating into concrete regulatory and procurement demand. For example, in January 2025, the Ministry of Road Transport announced plans to mandate ADAS in new heavy trucks and buses and mandatory ABS for two-wheelers from 2026.

Resultantly, the automotive safety systems market in India is expected to reach USD 7.4 billion by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 7-8% (2025-2033) driven by new safety regulations (mandatory airbags, ABS systems, Bharat NCAP), rising consumer awareness of occupant safety, and rapid adoption of connected and software-defined vehicles.

Indian and global OEMs operating in India are moving toward software-defined vehicle (SDV) architectures, actively seeking partners with capabilities in vehicle data platforms, embedded software and middleware, functional safety and OTA-enabled safety upgrades. These areas align strongly with Sweden’s global leadership in safety systems, embedded software, and system integration.

How

Join the Integrated Mobility Safety Program – India 2026 to connect with leading Indian OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, and ecosystem partners to capture opportunities in occupant safety, road safety, and next-generation mobility. Anchored in Sweden’s Vision Zero leadership, the program expands road safety to include in-vehicle protection, intelligent systems, and sustainable mobility aligned with India’s development goals.
