Sustainable Mining & Smelter Development in Indonesia

WHAT

Indonesia is accelerating the transformation of its mining sector to strengthen governance, sustainability, and competitiveness - while ensuring long-term resource security and economic value creation. This transition opens concrete opportunities for international technology providers and solution partners, particularly in the following areas:

  • Mining Digitalization & Transparency: The government is prioritizing integrated digital systems to improve oversight, transparency, and data-driven decision-making across mining operations. Opportunities include real-time production monitoring, data integration between mine sites and regulators, digital reporting, and operational analytics that support compliance, efficiency, and state revenue optimization.
  • Low-Emission and Electrified Mining: Mining companies are increasingly exploring electrified equipment, energy-efficient systems, and optimized fleet solutions to reduce emissions, fuel consumption, and operating costs - while improving safety and productivity. This creates demand for electrification technologies, power quality solutions, charging infrastructure, and smart energy management at mine sites.
  • Sustainable and Responsible Mining Practices: There is growing emphasis on ESG performance, environmental management, worker safety, and circular resource use. Mining operators are seeking proven solutions that help meet regulatory requirements, investor expectations, and international sustainability standards while maintaining operational efficiency.
  • Pilot Projects with Scale-Up Potential: Indonesia is actively encouraging pilot initiatives to test new digital, low-emission, and sustainable mining concepts. Successful pilots are expected to be replicated across multiple sites, creating long-term and scalable business opportunities.

HOW

To accelerate Indonesia’s sustainable mining transformation, Team Sweden—including the Embassy of Sweden, Business Sweden, Sida, Swedfund, and NIR—works collaboratively under the Sweden–Indonesia Sustainability Partnership (SISP). This platform enables structured engagement between governments, industry, and solution providers, combining policy dialogue, technical expertise, and financing to drive impactful projects. Key activities include:

  • G2G Framework:
    • Anchored in the Sweden–Indonesia Sustainability Partnership (SISP), supported by MoU and Implementation Agreement with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
    • Enables structured dialogue, pilot development, and project follow-up between governments.
    • Facilitates regulatory alignment and policy discussions to create a conducive environment for sustainable mining solutions.
  • Industry Engagement & Market Development
    • Focused engagement with key ministries, mining regulators, and leading mining companies to identify priority projects and early-stage opportunities.
    • Delegation visits and site visits to build trust and showcase Swedish capabilities in real-world mining environments.
    • B2B matchmaking to connect Swedish solution providers with Indonesian decision-makers and project owners.
  • Knowledge Sharing & Capacity Development
    • Technical workshops and roundtable dialogues addressing mining digitalization, electrification, safety, and sustainability challenges.
    • Joint seminars and training programs to transfer Swedish expertise in automation, ESG compliance, and low-emission technologies.
    • Development of knowledge platforms under SISP to ensure continuous learning and best-practice exchange.
  • Promotion of Swedish Solutions
    • Showcasing Swedish mining technologies in automation and digital systems, electrified equipment and energy management, and safety solutions that meet ESG standards.
    • Coordinated branding and outreach campaigns to position Sweden as a trusted partner for sustainable mining.
