Railway Expansion in Jakarta

WHAT

The Indonesian government is actively advancing the electrification of its commuter rail network as part of a broader strategy to modernize urban transportation and reduce dependence on diesel-powered trains. This initiative aims to improve energy efficiency, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance passenger comfort, while supporting regional development and its economic growth. Business opportunities identified in the market include:

  • The Jakarta–Surabaya high-speed rail mega project which is expected to replicate the success of the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed train, boosting economic activity and connectivity.
  • Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Expansion – a 25-kilometer MRT line in Jakarta, funded by a nearly 1 billion USD loan from Japan.
  • Urban Railway – potential new rail investment projects in major cities such as Bali, Bandung, and the new capital Nusantara.
