Japan Accelerates Green Transformation with Trillions in Industrial Investment
What
Japan is accelerating its Green Transformation (GX) to safeguard industrial competitiveness, secure export market access, and reduce reliance on fossil energy. The focus has shifted decisively from targets to execution, investment, and industrial deployment.
Japan aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 and –46% emissions by 2030, supported by a GX framework mobilising up to JPY 150 trillion (~EUR 900+ billion) over 10 years, primarily through private investment enabled by public policy and risk sharing.
A key instrument is the Green Innovation Fund (GIF), providing JPY 2+ trillion in support for large-scale projects in areas such as clean energy, batteries, industrial decarbonisation (steel, chemicals, cement), mobility, and energy efficiency.
How
Business Sweden Tokyo leads Pioneer the Possible, a long-term platform connecting Swedish sustainability solutions with Japanese priorities in sustainable transformation across industry, policy, and innovation ecosystems.
The platform enables Swedish companies to:
- Engage with Japanese corporates and policymakers shaping GX roadmaps
- Position solutions in real transformation projects, not just pilots
- Gain insight into GX funding mechanisms, regulation, and timelines
Activities include targeted stakeholder engagement, thematic roundtables, joint events and delegations, and the annual Sweden–Japan Sustainability Summit, which has featured participation from the Crown Princess of Sweden, the Swedish Prime Minister, Japanese ministers, and senior industry leaders.
Join Team Sweden in Tokyo and Pioneer the Possible in supporting Japan’s Green Transformation. The Sweden–Japan Pioneer the Possible platform has been connecting Swedish and Japanese stakeholders since 2021, with the purpose of increasing visibility for Swedish sustainable solutions, enabling Swedish companies to engage in regulatory and infrastructure developments in Japan, and identifying concrete sustainability-linked business opportunities together with ambitious Japanese and global partners.
Each year, the platform culminates in the Sweden–Japan Sustainability Summit, bringing together senior decision-makers from leading Swedish and Japanese companies, ministries, and academia to share insights, align priorities, and initiate collaboration.
As a partner to the platform, your company gains the opportunity to help shape the annual agenda, contribute to stakeholder mapping and engagement, and receive support in adapting and communicating your sustainability value proposition to the Japanese market.
