OPPORTUNITIES FROM 33 CRITICAL POWER TRANSMISSION LINE PROJECTS IN VIETNAM

WHAT
  • Power Development Plan (PDP) 8 Revised estimates the investment capital demand needed to reach its transmission grid development of 18.1 billion USD by 2030, and 15.9 billion USD by 2035. The plan identifies the following objectives:

    • Adding 102.900 MVA new 500kV substation and 12,944 km 500kV lines by 2030.
    • Introducing HVDC lines from 2031-2035: 26.000-36.000 MW, 3.500-6.600 km.
    • Improved grid interconnection in the Mekong region and ultra-high voltage interconnection in ASEAN.

HOW

Vietnam will focus on the following critical projects under power transmission line development, with commercialization within 2025-2030:

  • Projects for connecting and relieving power generation capacity, including relieving capacity from large power sources, strengthening the linkage and relieving capacity of hydropower plants in the Northwest region (12 projects);
  • Projects to increase electricity imports, especially from China and Laos (7 projects);
  • Projects to strengthen transmission capacity and supply electricity to high-demand areas (14 projects).

These are the clearly identified and approved projects. Otherwise, opportunities could also be seen project such as the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable connecting Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore facilitates the export of offshore wind power.
