MODERNIZING PHILIPPINE AIRPORTS FOR IMPROVED GLOBAL CONNECTIVITY

WHAT
  • The Philippines is at a critical juncture in addressing its aviation challenges. Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the country’s largest and primary international gateway, has been operating far beyond its capacity. Built to handle 32 million passengers annually, NAIA has accommodated an average of 42 million passengers yearly over the past four years, resulting in persistent congestion, flight delays, and operational inefficiencies that negatively impact passenger experience and airline performance.
  • Following its privatization in 2024, NAIA is undergoing targeted modernization efforts aimed at improving efficiency, safety, and passenger flow. Some initiatives led by the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) include the deployment of additional biometric electronic gates (e-gates), passenger boarding bridges, advanced X-ray and detection technologies, as well as road network upgrades and installation of uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems to enhance accessibility and operational resilience.
  • Simultaneously, the government is advancing the New Manila International Airport (NMIA), a world-class, green-design facility designed to accommodate up to 100 million passengers annually, with operations targeted to commence by 2027. Complementing this significant investment are efforts to improve and expand regional airport infrastructure, including Laguindingan and Bohol-Panglao International Airports, with over USD 300 million allocated in 2025, reflecting a nationwide strategy to decentralize air traffic and support regional economic growth.
  • Collectively, these developments highlight the Philippines’ strong commitment to resolving aviation bottlenecks. This opens opportunities for aviation support services and aviation-related businesses, such as technologies for air traffic management and navigation, ground support equipment, and night-rating capabilities.

HOW
  • Participate in airport modernization projects, with a focus on sustainable and energy-efficient technologies that can be used to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
  • Deploy advanced automation and digital solutions for passenger processing, airside and landside traffic management, security screening, and baggage handling to enhance airport operations.
  • Provide airport operations and management expertise through training and knowledge-transfer programs to build local capabilities and enhance overall passenger experience.
